Convert SVG to group layer

I am working on a photoshop plugin where I have SVG & PNG illustrations/icons but when I click on the SVG illustration it’s come as PNG, but I want it should be editable like a group layer.

Is there any way to do that?

I think were there some improvements in Illustrator copy/paste? I think now it should be able to paste it in more editable manner.

Otherwise, when I worked as a web designer I usually used Affinity Designer to resave SVG as PSD and continue in Photoshop.
